Marriage is one weapon in the arsenal of male chauvinists to oppress women. Child marriage, depriving the women of her right to free consent for marriage, wife beating etc., are only few instances where this weapon is mostly used. Recently, a girl child of 8 years was killed by her’ husband’ on the nuptial night in Yemen where the government has not banned such violence.
Continuing brutal violence against women in India are the outcomes of the society which thinks the women are inferior beings than men. Religious and cultural practices only aid , sustain and abet this situation with the governments- mostly male-dominated- remaining mute spectators.
